Lyn's Story

Created by Nick 8 years ago
Lyn was born on 23rd April 1948 at Rochford General Hospital. She lived with her parents Tom and Louie Nottage and elder adopted brother called Bobby. Lyn grew up going to Rochford junior and secondary schools.

When Lyn started work, she did various jobs around Rochford, in a supermarket, hairdressers and then eventually at MK Electrics in Progress Road, Southend.
Lyn met Malcolm on the 1st October 1972 at a disco called Zero 6 in Southend. They made a date for the following weekend. Lyn asked Malcolm to pick her up at Southend Victoria station as it was easier than trying to find where she lived in Benfleet. Malcolm arrived at Southend at the train station and parked his car next to the only other car in the carpark, a Jaguar MK 10, then went to meet Lyn at the bus stop. On the way back to carpark, all you could see was the Jag and Lyn's eyes lit up (she must of thought he was minted) and she went to the passenger side. Malcolm pointed to the little Austin A35 countryman and sheepishly said that it was in fact his car. Lyn always referred to it as a van but it was an estate car. Anyway, their first date was at the Windmill in Copford - Malcolm obviously wanted to impress as it was outside Lyn's usual going out territory. The date went well and they continued to see each other.

In 1973 Lyn and Malcolm set up home together with at Edwin's Cottages, Woodham Ferrers, together with Lyn's dog Memphis. This was also where Malcolm noticed Lyn's passion for growing things.

They married on 5th October 1974 at Chelmsford Registry office. Their first child, Kelly, was born in 1975. Lyn and Malcolm helped out with Tom and Louie's shopping.
In 1979, Nick was born. The family also took on more cats!

In 1981, Tom passed away and as Louie suffered from acrophobia it was decided that everybody should move in together in Lyn and Malcolm's first, owned, house in Loughton.

The household now included 7 cats and 2 dogs! In Loughton, Lyn and Malcolm managed a newsagents.

In 1985 the family moved to Great Baddow, near Chelmsford. Louie unfortunately passed away in 1993.

The next move took the Turners to Lawford in 1994. Shortly after settling in the area Lyn expressed a desire to own an allotment. Over the years the allotment expanded to about three times its original size. Malcolm helped out by building sheds and greenhouses - but Lyn settled let her talent for growing flourish. Lyn could take a leaf cutting and weeks later proudly present you with a fully grown plant.

The allotment became Lyn's little domain. If she grew too much Lyn would give the produce away. Lyn was also very busy walking the dog and meeting the other walkers in the area. Whilst doing all of this Lyn ran the house impeccably, she was Malcolm's engine driver.
